Turkey: Worst rainfall in 80 years unleashes deadly floods near Istanbul

Massive downpours near Istanbul have triggered severe flooding, marking the region's heaviest rainfall in 80 years. The torrential deluge transformed local streets into fast-moving rivers, overturning vehicles and knocking out electrical power.

At least three people have been confirmed dead as a result of the disaster, and emergency response crews are currently clearing wreckage in an effort to locate five individuals who remain missing.

Why It Matters

Istanbul and its surrounding provinces in northwestern Turkey have faced growing exposure to flash flooding during periods of heavy seasonal rain. Rapid urbanization across the area over recent decades has altered natural waterways and put added strain on drainage infrastructure. Across the broader eastern Mediterranean region, meteorologists and urban planners have increasingly highlighted how short-duration, high-intensity rainfall events present escalating risks to major population hubs.
