Paramount has appointed Ynon Kreiz as its new co-CEO, positioning him to co-lead the company ahead of its impending $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. Kreiz, the former chairman and CEO of Mattel, will share leadership responsibilities with Paramount’s current chairman and CEO, David Ellison. Kreiz is scheduled to officially assume his new role on October 5th.

Under the new leadership structure, the combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery entity will report jointly to both executives. According to a statement from Paramount,

“Ellison will focus on the company’s long-term strategy, creative vision and direction, including its talent relationships, strategic partnerships, technology and capital allocation. Kreiz will focus on the company’s day-to-day management and integration of the combined businesses.”

Kreiz has served as the head of Mattel since joining the toy company in 2018. During his tenure, Mattel collaborated with Warner Bros. Pictures to release the blockbuster Barbie film.

The executive appointment comes alongside significant legal and organizational developments for the merger. A judge has approved Paramount's recently announced settlement in a lawsuit brought by several states that had been attempting to block the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, Reuters reported.

Additionally, Paramount's leadership team is undergoing further changes. On Tuesday, Paramount's streaming chief, Cindy Holland, announced her decision to step down from her post. According to a report from Variety, HBO chief Casey Bloys is now "poised" to take leadership of both Paramount Plus and HBO.

Why It Matters

The merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery represents a massive consolidation within the media industry, driven by traditional entertainment companies seeking the scale necessary to compete against tech giants in the streaming market. Combining these historic Hollywood entities brings together major film studios, television networks, and streaming services under a single corporate umbrella. Furthermore, recruiting an executive with a background in toy manufacturing and brand management reflects a broader entertainment trend of aggressively leveraging established intellectual property into multi-platform media franchises.
