An ancient and rare breed of cattle has been introduced to the grounds of a historic North Yorkshire estate as part of a 30-year conservation initiative. The arrival of the White Park cows, believed to be one of the oldest species of their kind, marks the latest phase of the Bog Hall rewilding project at the Castle Howard Estate near Malton.
According to the estate, the cattle's grazing in newly-sown meadows will "help create a more varied habitat structure." To prepare for the animals, workers installed approximately three miles (5km) of fencing, incorporating specialized badger tunnels and otter passes to ensure local wildlife can still navigate the area safely.
Guy Thallon, Castle Howard's head of natural environment, shared that the process of reintroducing animals has been "inspiring for the whole Castle Howard team and beyond." The estate's ecological efforts are set to
