Officers from the Benue State Police Command have detained a suspected cultist who allegedly caused panic by brandishing a firearm and making threats at a market square in Aliade, located within the Gwer East Local Government Area.
The suspect's disruptive behavior and display of the weapon prompted a swift response from police operatives, who arrived at the scene and successfully took him into custody.
Upon searching the suspect, law enforcement officers recovered an English pistol loaded with five rounds of live ammunition, alongside a locally made pistol containing four cartridges. Police also discovered charms in his possession.
The suspect is currently being held in police custody as authorities conduct an investigation to uncover the details of the incident and determine if he is connected to other local crimes. Officials believe the arrest will bolster ongoing initiatives to curb cultism and criminal acts in Aliade and its neighboring areas.
Why It Matters
Cultism has long been a persistent security challenge across Nigeria, evolving from university-based confraternities into street-level gangs that engage in violent turf wars, armed robbery, and extortion. Benue State, in particular, has frequently grappled with security issues ranging from communal clashes to localized gang violence, prompting law enforcement to intensify crackdowns on suspected cult members. Furthermore, the widespread availability of locally fabricated firearms, which are cheap and difficult to trace, continues to complicate policing efforts and fuel violent crime throughout the region.
