Nigeria has been battling a multi-front security crisis for over a decade, most notably against Islamist insurgent groups like Boko Haram and its offshoots in the northeast. In recent years, the country's northwest and central regions have also suffered from a surge in violence by heavily armed criminal gangs, known locally as bandits, who conduct mass kidnappings for ransom. Because of these widespread threats, Nigerian troops are deployed in nearly all of the country's 36 states, leading to prolonged strain on military resources and recurrent concerns regarding troop welfare.
