The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended 17 motorists as it launched a new traffic enforcement initiative, "Operation Velvet," aimed at curbing road traffic violations.
SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the spokesperson for the command, confirmed the arrests in a statement. The crackdown, which commenced on Monday in the Dutse Local Government Area, is designed to ensure compliance with traffic laws, minimize road accidents, and enhance safety for all commuters.
According to SP Shiisu, the 17 drivers were stopped for various infractions, such as driving with covered license plates, operating vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows, and overloading. Following their arrest by the enforcement team, the motorists were arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The police command emphasized that Operation Velvet is not intended to harass law-abiding citizens but rather to foster responsible driving habits and uphold traffic regulations. Authorities announced plans to expand the initiative to other major towns and urban centers throughout Jigawa State, warning that violators will face legal prosecution.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, called on motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists, and other road users to strictly adhere to traffic guidelines and refrain from reckless driving. He also appealed to the public to assist law enforcement by reporting persistent traffic violations that threaten lives and property.
