George Ebong emerges chairman FCT NMA

Dr. George Ebong has been elected as the new Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

Dr. Ebong secured the leadership position after defeating his opponent, Dr. Michael Olanrewaju, in an election conducted on Thursday, July 30, 2026. He succeeds Dr. Ayogu Emeka as the head of the FCT NMA.

Prior to his election as the NMA FCT Chairman, Dr. Ebong served as the Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FCT Chapter.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Ebong expressed his gratitude to the doctors of the FCT for placing their confidence in his leadership. He also pledged that he would prioritize the welfare of the association's members during his tenure.

Why It Matters

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) is the primary professional association for registered medical practitioners and dental surgeons across Nigeria. The FCT chapter represents a critical branch of the organization due to its location in the nation's capital, where members frequently interface with federal health ministries and national policymakers. Leadership changes in this chapter are highly significant, as the association routinely advocates for improved healthcare infrastructure, funding, and doctor retention strategies amid a broader trend of medical professionals emigrating from the country.
