An environmental conservation group has reported that a wildfire has consumed thousands of hectares of vegetation on Mount Kenya. According to the Mount Kenya Trust, approximately 8,700 hectares have been destroyed since the blaze was first reported on September 1.
Why It Matters
Mount Kenya is the nation's highest peak and serves as one of Kenya's primary "water towers," acting as a critical catchment area that feeds major rivers and supplies fresh water to millions of people and agricultural areas downstream. The mountain and its surrounding national park are also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for their unique afro-alpine ecosystems and diverse wildlife populations. Wildfires in this high-altitude region threaten to disrupt these fragile ecosystems, accelerate soil erosion, and severely impact the regional water supply upon which local communities depend.
