At least 14 individuals have lost their lives and 11 others remain missing after torrential rains triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Nepal.
The district of Chitwan has been identified as the area hardest hit by the deluge. Currently, flood warnings are active across 49 of the nation's districts. These warnings encompass several regions that are still recovering from a devastating disaster last month, which claimed the lives of 1,450 people.
Why It Matters
Nepal is exceptionally vulnerable to hydrometeorological disasters due to its steep mountainous topography and its reliance on the annual summer monsoon for precipitation. In recent years, the Himalayan region has faced increasingly intense and unpredictable rainfall patterns, which experts link to rising global temperatures. These severe weather events trigger rapid landslides and flash floods, routinely threatening lives, destroying critical infrastructure, and overwhelming local emergency response capacities.
