California-based flying car developer Alef Aeronautics has poked fun at Tesla by releasing a video showing its flying vehicle soaring directly over a Tesla Roadster.
In the video, the 11-year-old company officially welcomed the Elon Musk-led electric vehicle manufacturer to the "flying car race." Reflecting on the competitive landscape, Alef Chief Executive Officer Jim Dukhovny stated that his company had been competing alone in the space for 11 years.
Why It Matters
The lighthearted rivalry highlights the growing interest in merging automotive design with personal aviation technology. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has repeatedly teased that the delayed second-generation Tesla Roadster could feature optional SpaceX technology allowing the vehicle to hover or fly briefly. Meanwhile, numerous companies in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sector are actively developing personal flying vehicles, though widespread commercialization faces significant regulatory, safety, and infrastructure hurdles from aviation authorities worldwide.
